WIPs – What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on my debut romance novel. It’s a small town romance vibe with some friends to lovers action.
Why do you write?
I write because it’s a part of who I am. I need to write in order to express myself, however, writing a book has always been an aspiration of mine. I never thought that I’d be good enough to write a book, or to self-publish, so I never tried. It wasn’t until this year, that I was struck with a story idea that kept coming back to me and pulled me into writing. Literally, I felt like I couldn’t NOT write it. I had to try it. I’m writing because I have a story to tell and absolutely have to get it out.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
The book that I’m writing now stemmed from a poem that I wrote a few years ago. Though, lately, I find that inspiration strikes at the most random times. I recently was at a beach and saw a guy playing guitar and that stemmed into a story idea. I came home and write the first chapter so that way I had the idea written out and I could go back to it once I’m done with my current WIP. For another story, it was a potential character name that inspired me and from that came a one-liner that I really liked. Inspiration can come from anywhere!
Any writing related tips you would like to share?
Read, read, and read! The more you read the better your writing will be!
Any advice for new writers?
Honestly, just don’t give up. It sounds simple but sometimes it can be so easy to want to throw in the towel. Another piece of advice, don’t stress much over that first draft. It’s a first draft! Not everything will be perfect, you will re-write parts of your story later on. Everything will be fine!
Anything else you would like to share about your writing or writing process?
If you like books that can help your writing, I’d suggest “The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writers Guide to Character Expression” by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi. And, if you are a romance author, “Sexy Words for Writers – TheSEXaurus” by Stefani Olsen. It’s surprisingly helpful for writing those daunting scenes!
